Repeatability beats heroics

Embedded Linux development becomes much calmer when every developer can reproduce the environment, build the same artifact, and understand what is running on the target.

Core workflow

Use a repeatable build container or documented host setup. Keep runtime configuration separate from the application. Version deployment scripts. Store target logs in a consistent location.

Observability

At minimum, a field device should expose:

  • application version and build hash;
  • service health;
  • recent error logs;
  • network status;
  • disk and memory pressure;
  • device-specific sensor or protocol counters.

Remote debugging

Remote debugging should be planned before deployment. SSH access, serial fallback, coredumps, and structured logs make the difference between a fix and a guess.

Keep it boring

The most effective embedded Linux workflow is not flashy. It is predictable, documented, and easy to repeat under pressure.
